Welcome to The Mobile Melody Show, where we bring you the voices shaping the culture! We were recently honored with the opportunity to dive deep into the world of independent music with the masterminds behind the Southern Entertainment Awards—DJ Infamous and Janiro Hawkins II. From a bold vision on Jefferson Street to a movement that’s amplified Southern talent for over two decades, these two have changed the game. Get ready for untold stories, industry gems, and the passion that built the SEAs—let’s get into it!
The Southern Entertainment Awards (SEAs) were co-founded in 2004, by Jesse “DJ Infamous” Johnson Jr. and Janiro Hawkins II, though Nashville isn’t the first stop on this train. Hailing from Flint, Michigan, the pair would find their start at a small hometown church, where they both shared a love for music. Education, career paths and other life events would eventually separate the two, but fate would reunite them.
DJ Infamous went on to become a veteran DJ with experience in numerous clubs and radio stations alike. For those who remember, DJ Infamous also founded Platinum Bound Records, which used to be located on Jefferson Street in Nashville, Tn. The record store played a pivotal role in the local music scene. Their collaboration at Platinum Bound Records would serve as the catalyst for what would later be known as The Southern Entertainment Awards (SEAs).
TSU Alumni Janiro Hawkins’ wealth of knowledge in event organization and a keen understanding of the entertainment landscape, complemented DJ Infamous’s expertise. Together, they aimed to create a platform that would spotlight the achievements of independent artists, DJs, and industry professionals across the South.
The inaugural SEAs were first held in 2004, and over the years, the event has grown significantly, attracting thousands of attendees and expanding its categories to encompass various facets of the entertainment industry. The awards have become a cornerstone in recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Southern talent to the broader music and entertainment landscape.
Through their dedication and vision, DJ Infamous and Janiro Hawkins II have provided invaluable opportunities for emerging artists and have played a pivotal role in elevating Southern entertainment to national prominence. It's been a platform for countless artists who later rose to become household names, from the likes of Gucci Mane, Jelly Roll, Nicki Minaj, B.O.B, David Banner, and Yo Gotti. It’s no secret that the SEAs has done its part in showcasing the best in independent talent before they took the industry by storm.
From a bold idea at Platinum Bound Records to a movement that’s shaped independent music for over two decades, DJ Infamous and Janiro Hawkins II have proven that the South isn’t just making noise—it’s setting the standard. Keep chasing your dreams, supporting indie talent, and celebrating the culture. Until next time, stay inspired, stay grinding, and keep the music alive!
We thank you for 21 years of dedication to the community and artists alike. Your commitment to uplifting talent and shaping the culture has made a lasting impact, and we look forward to seeing many more years of excellence to come!”
This is the Mobile Melody Show, and that’s a wrap on this exclusive conversation with the visionaries behind the Southern Entertainment Awards! Until next time!
